Plants That Must Be Pruned in January or February

"January and February may not necessarily be the months when we enjoy the fruits of our labor, but that doesn’t mean we can’t use them as stepping stones to set our gardens up for success for the growing season to come.

Mid-to-late January and all of February are when I do a significant part of my pruning for the year, since I leave most of my perennials and shrubs in place during the fall season."  Comment from Rural Sprout

Following the gardening rules is the best practice, but you must learn them first.  I'm a bad gardener and don't follow rules, but I'm learning now.

How To Prune Rose Bushes – And Why To Do It In Late Winter!

Photo source:  This Is My Garden

"Pruning is essential for maintaining the health and shape of most rose bushes. It not only enhances their appearance but also improves air circulation, lowers the risk of disease, and promotes fresh growth and blooming.

But in spite of what many might think, the best time for that pruning is not once the bush has started to produce its foliage in early spring. Nor is it in summer or fall when the bush is still actively growing. Why? Because pruning at all of these times can actually do more harm than good for the plant."  Comment from This Is My Garden

This is an excellent article all about pruning roses for those who grow rose bushes.

Six Bushes To Avoid Pruning In The Fall

"Did you know that there are six bushes and shrubs that you should always avoid pruning in the fall?

While fall is the perfect time for cleaning up your flowerbeds and cutting back many perennials, when it comes to the chore of pruning and shaping bushes and shrubs, fall is not the ideal time to be cutting them back. Especially for bushes and shrubs that require old wood in order to bloom."  Comment from Simple Garden Life

Since I live in Zone 9, where there are subtle changes from one season to another with occasional drastic changes that usually last a few days.  In this climate, I have been able to prune anytime of the year, but avoid winter months.  So I don't know the rules of pruning and look forward to learning how to do it the correct way.

Pruning a potted fruit tree

Since most of our fruit trees were killed by winter freezes and Hurricane Irma, we are thinking of starting them again in large containers.  They would be much easier to maintain and keep alive.

It will be a new experiment for us and we need all the information we can get on the basics.  This article contains everything you need to know about pruning those fruit trees!
